ENGLISH

Our regulars at the practice area will be able to enjoy this facility again from this coming Monday the 27th of October. We encourage all our customers to come and check by themselves this improved part of the Club, and to take advantage of this wonderful second spring that October’s weather is giving us.

And to continue with improvements issues, we take up again the repairing of Los Olivos’ bunkers. Our maintenance staff is starting to work on the last of the three bunkers at hole number 12 on this course.

This is a remodeling of the bunkers, in which the first step to take is to dump all the old stuff to reach the base. Then put the new drainage to finally cover everything with new sand.

As we said before, two of this three bunkers were half done from last week; so soon our players will be delighted by this 12th fairway of Los Olivos, with totally repaired bunkers in perfect conditions.

ENGLISH

Welcome to September, a month to begin or reintroduce new or postponed projects, with an initiative that Mijas Community has been claiming for a long time.

Mijas Town Council will finally see the results of their plan to construct a roundabout to access Mijas Golf’s development. This is a very important investment to improve entry and exit to this great complex.

There are approximately 2.500 neighbors living in these villas and houses; and we cannot miss out either that it is the entrance to Mijas Golf Club, with two of the most requested golf courses in the region.

This means a daily traffic of thousands of vehicles for which this intersection is such a danger due to the lack of fluidity and safety – at the moment, it is one of our roads’ “black spots” -.

These works are supposed to be concluded within two months more or less and will be carried out in two phases to disrupt traffic as little as possible.

As an added improvement, they will also restore 120 linear meters of the stone wall surrounding the area.

ENGLISH

You may feel confused by this strange word in the title, but we are simply referring to a “low-power” garden. Clearer now, isn’t it?

And a garden of his kind is one mainly integrated by autochthonous or from a similar climate plants; as these are – obviously – much more adaptable to our landing’s light, humidity and conditions.

The word Xeriscape started to be used in the United States in the early 80s. “Xero” means dry. A drought hit the west of USA during the seventies and showed the urgent need to devise a new concept in garden to be more respectful of natural resources.

This type of gardening totally rejects the wastefulness of water, specially in climates where it is a scarce.

Xeriscape came to Spain in the 90s also fostered by a harsh drought.

After this introduction, it is easy to imagine a strow-colored place full of cactus and prickly pears. But, in fact, many of these sustainable gardens are truly amazing because of their design and variety; and they are, at the same time, new habitats for the native bees and butterflies.

You see…a natural area that requires very little maintenance and full of other advantages. An ecological investment to pay back to nature just a millionth of its immense and selfless gift.

The commitment to this initiative is our little contribution to improve our environment’s health: You can verify that a garden designed and kept with an efficient use of irrigation consumes only a quarter of the water spent in a conventional garden.

For the moment, at Mijas Golf, you will find these features spaces around the practice area, by the starter’s Hut. But, in the nearer future, we will be able to enjoy of these gardens dotted also along the course.

ENGLISH

We keep staring at those aspects in our facilities that can be improved.

This is why our Greenkeeper, always supported by a qualified maintenance team, is completely involved in the greens’ bunkers’ reparation on Los Olivos.

To get an optimal result, it is necessary to mold them again: The bunkers must be emptied and the drainage must be removed to start cleaning it of all the gravel, etc…

Afterwards, the necessary excavations are made to insert the new drainages and, finally, to cover them with new sand.

At the present moment, the bunkers of the 1st green are finished; and they are working on the 9th green’s ones.

Then, of course, they will continue fixing the neediest ones orderly.

ENGLISH

Hollow tinning of the Green

The difference between a green and plant at home is that the green is continually suffering the player’s footsteps, the weight of heavy machinery of the golf course and the aggression of the golf balls hitting and compressing the ground. Therefore it is very important the use of the pitch-repairs.

This soil’s compaction makes the dump less soft, less fluffy, and therefore the water stands on the surface and does not reach the deeper layers, those in which the plant roots, and the same happens with the air.

The hollow tinning is a work of aeration of the greens, there are two different ways to do it depending on the type of spike, hollow and solid: The micro one is when solid small-bore tubes are used and does not affect the game; and the major one, which is normally called hollow tinning or spiking works and affects the game on the green.

The aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and benefits deep rooting, helping the lawn to stay healthy. Removing the thatch layer (organic matter) avoid its concentration on the surface, which predispose the greens to become soft and slow. It also promotes the development of microorganisms that benefit the growth of grass; and finally provides good drainage and water infiltration.

Depending on the purpose you search at a golf course, should be performed in a monthly basis with the micro-hollow tinning and twice a year with the major hollow tinning one.

What time of year should be done and why it is needed?

Normally, the major spiking works of the greens (which we will notice in the game), takes place before the arrival of high summer temperatures (spring) and  before the arrival of the low temperatures of winter / fall, to leave the course in the best possible conditions before the hardest seasons’ extreme temperatures and variable periods of rain.

The green soil must have a balance between solid (50%), air (25%) and water (25%). Due to the player’s traffic suffered by the golf course this balance is  lost and, therefore, the space available for oxygen and water (compaction) is also vanished. With the hollow tinning works that balance is restored and the inlet water and nutrients, that are so necessary, are produced.

In winter these ducts are good to facilitate the entry of rain water and to wipe the excess of accumulated salts due to the use of reclaimed water. In summer they are necessary for the water to reach the roots and to ensure that the least amount of water is lost by evaporation.

Every golfer should understand that to aerate (hollow tinning) the greens of the golf course at least 2 times a year is essential to achieve good maintenance and a healthy grass. The benefits of the spiking works are unquestionable.

The grass that makes up the green, like any other plant and  as it is a living being,  requires an optimal combination of water, sand and air, because if we compact the soil too much the plant may die.

In addition, the hollow tinning is the most effective way to minimize the undesirable effects of excessive accumulation of mattress.

Development & Procedure

Basically, the hollow tinning is to stick some hollow tubes in the ground, which will produce the small holes that are covered afterwards with sand (top dressing). These little holes will allow air filtration and descompaction of the ground around it.

The first thing it should be done is to fertilize the green for the plant strengthening to endure the spiking process. Later, the green is treated with a specific machine, which extract small plugs of  2-3 cm in diameter and 5-6 cm deep from the ground. Once the green has been punched, the surface must be cleaned and it is proceeded to spread a layer of sand (commonly called re-priming) which will be used as a new substratum to cover the holes.

This sand will help water and air filtration, which is essential for the proper development of the grass.

The green recovery process usually takes between 7-12 days (depending on weather conditions) and is usually done only twice a year, to have 48 weeks of perfect, firm and fast greens. After this recovery time, the greens will be again in perfect conditions, and we will be able to enjoy this wonderful sport that inspires us  to improve ourselves everyday.

In its second year of competition, the circuit will pass through new countries and will commence in Belgium on April 12. Europe’s top hitters will return to show their talent and Britain’s Joe Miller will defend his tour championship title.

The Long Drive emotion is back thanks to LDET, that will introduce this sport into a minimum of five new European countries. In April, the Wellington Golf Club in Ostende (Belgium), will start the season, which will end in November and no doubt will be hard fought.

Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Italy are all introduced as new destinations, and their best holes and facilities will be the battlefield of the best hits of Miller, Persson, McSloy et al. LDET season repeat venues such as Prosper Golf Resort (Celadna, Czech Republic) or the Mijas Golf International (Malaga, Spain). In the coming weeks the new cities will be announced to complete an expected and continuous growing circuit.

Britain’s Joe Miller will defend the title as current European Long Drive Champion achieved in 2013. Miller reached the trophy in the last hit of the season, snatching the crown off Sweden’s Andreas Persson in Torremirona (The LDET Masters Cup). Thanks to LDET’s circuit, this season many more European players will jump on the Long Drive cart to tour Europe.

Apart from the new competition stages, LDET goes forward into the professionalization of the circuit and will publish, in the coming days, the new tournament regulations. Tee and fairway measurements and players equipment will be regulated to improve the competitiveness and development of each championship. Also, the circuit will keep open the amateur player inclusion from each country, enabling them to test their skills against Europe’s best.
